Let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of the type of wedding registry that has nothing but Waterford crystal bowls and silver candlesticks on it. For the record, I believe in a practical registry that covers all ends of the gift-giving spectrum. My rule of thumb is this: if you really want china, and you know you will use your china, and (probably most importantly) you know your guests can afford to buy you china, by all means, register for it. Otherwise, don't bother. That’s just my personal opinion, and thankfully we are all entitled to one.
That being said, I am a big fan of wedding registries in general for a few simple reasons:
First and foremost, a wedding registry provides us all with the opportunity to buy the bride and groom something they will actually really like because (gasp) they picked it out! Pure genius!
Secondly, this lovely little list allows wedding guests to focus and not fret about what in the world to gift in the first place.
Finally, many stores that offer wedding registries also offer a discount on the items that were not purchased for the bride and groom, often called a “registry completion discount”. This little bonus savings can be anywhere in the realm of 5 to 20% off of remaining registry items.
Having given my reasons for my love affair with wedding registries, another beautiful thing about them has been their evolution. For example, couples can now open a wedding registry/account at a bank where guests can deposit money towards the couple’s future home: http://www.suntrustmortgage.com/bridalrg.asp. (Please be sure to do your homework and thoroughly investigate each organization you consider doing this with!)
There are also honeymoon registries where guests can help couples pay for portions/aspects of their honeymoon: http://www.justtogether.com or http://www.travelersjoy.com. (Do be sure to read the fine print on these – many take a % of the proceeds as a fee for setting up the registry.)
And my favorite type of registry is one where guests are encouraged to donate the cash they would have spent on the bride and groom to a charity of the couple’s choice: http://wedding.weddingchannel.com/catalog/store_information.asp?retailer... . In closing, registries are a wonderful vehicle for ensuring that you get just what you want on your wedding day, whatever that looks like. And on a side note, if you and your spouse-to-be have decided that you would like to ask for cash instead of material gifts for your nuptials, and your mother is absolutely horrified, tell her that by etiquette standards, you aren’t breaking a single rule!
